The name of the estate was derived as early as the 17th century from the old Gascon word ‘Couhins’ which means ‘borders’ or ‘limits’. Under the leadership of Edouard Gasqueton who also owned Château Carlon-Ségur, the estate/Couhins was promoted to First Growth of the Graves in 1959. The INRA later acquired the estate – in 1969 – and engaged in its complete restructuration.
